Over the next few years, a new urban campus will be developed and implemented at Dreispitz. Additional to a new building for the University of Basel, it will also include housing, shops stocking everyday necessities, restaurants and day care, as well as leisure facilities and commercial property. A contemporary, modern district is being created – a new location with a distinctive character, a strong identity and an appeal extending beyond the local region.

In 2021, the landowner, Christoph Merian Stiftung (CMS), and Swiss Prime Site Immobilien, as the lease holder for the development, launched a public tender for an urban planning study to transform the new university quarter at Dreispitz. The assessment panel unanimously recommended that the clients consider the proposal made by the team from Grafton Architects (Dublin) together with Blaser Architekten (Basel) as part of this study as the basis for subsequent planning. The assessment panel was particularly impressed by their intelligent, aesthetic and sustainable approach, which both addresses existing issues and responds to the current challenges facing a people-focused, climate-friendly urban development. This project approach – which gives balanced consideration to the environment, mobility and society – will create a sustainable district that is in keeping with its immediate surroundings. The proportionate vertical densification of the individual plots will create outdoor spaces that act as attractive, green and unpaved recreational areas, thereby reflecting the aims of heat reduction. Grafton Architects have won several awards, including the renowned Pritzker Prize in 2020 and the EU Mies van der Rohe Award in 2022. Swiss Prime Site Immobilien is working closely with CMS, the Canton of Basel-Landschaft, the Münchenstein local authority and the University of Basel on this development.
